What drives costs in Hanoi?
Like Bangkok, Hanoi is far cheaper on the ground than the business-travel rate suggests. Street food and simple hotels in the Old Quarter keep daily costs low. Ride-hailing apps are a simple way to get around without haggling.
How were these numbers worked out?
The comfort figure is the official US government per diem for Hanoi: up to $236 a night for lodging and $126 a day for meals and incidentals (effective May 1, 2025). It is what the government allows its staff on business trips, so it reflects a good hotel and restaurant meals.
Most travellers spend less, so we derive two more styles with a fixed rule: budget is 20% of the lodging rate plus 40% of the meals rate, and mid-range is 50% of lodging plus 70% of meals. This rule is the same for every city. In cheap countries it can overstate what backpackers really spend, so treat the budget figure as an upper limit there.
